Horma (“Sanctity”) Screening

still shot from HormaThe first event in ILSP: LSC’s film series on Women, Rights, and Activism in the Muslim World is a screening of “Horma” (“Sanctity”), on Thursday, February 16, at 5:00pm, Wasserstein 1023 (Harvard Law School campus), featuring Saudi director and actress Ahd Kamel. The film was shot in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and stars Kamel as Areej, a pregnant young Saudi widow, who battles social customs to protect her unborn child. Ahd, a Saudi actor and filmmaker, studied film direction and acting in New York City. “The Shoemaker,” her directorial debut, won multiple awards from festivals worldwide. She won the Golden Gate Award for Best Actress in San Francisco for her role in “Razn.” Ahd was recently a jury member for the Emirates film competition in Abu Dhabi.

After the film, Kamel will join us via videoconference for commentary and Q&A. In addition, we welcome Pascal Menoret, author of Joyriding in Riyadh and Professor of Modern Middle East Studies at Brandeis University, who joins us as discussant. Kristen Stilt, Professor of Law and Director of ILSP: LSC, and Salma Waheedi, ILSP: LSC Visiting Fellow will moderate.
