A book launch party to celebrate the release of Shahab Ahmed’s What Is Islam? will be held on Tuesday, December 1, from 5:00-7:00 pm in the offices of the Society of Fellows, 78 Mt. Auburn Street,Cambridge, MA.
Sadly, Ahmed passed away after a brief illness on Thursday, September 17. He is missed by countless friends and colleagues around the world.
In What Is Islam?, Ahmed presents a bold new conceptualization of Islam that challenges dominant understandings grounded in the categories of “religion” and “culture” or that privilege law and scripture. He argues that these modes of thinking obstruct us from understanding Islam, distorting it, diminishing it, and rendering it incoherent.
Noah Feldman, Felix Frankfurter Professor of Law at Harvard Law School said of the work, “Not merely field changing, but the boldest and best thing I have read in any field in years.”
